Happy Thursday!

Nobody ever really thinks about Thursday.  The ‘real’ middle child of the week.  Many would think that Wednesday has it the worst, but they are wrong.  Although it gets misspelled every now and again, good old Wednesday is the peak of many a week.  We know that we’ve made it through the dreary Mondays and the hopeful Tuesdays. We can look forward to the ever so casual Thursday and the excitement of Friday.    But Thursday on its own, well, it seldom gets the credit it deserves.

We like Thursdays because of its hype for the weekend. We like Thursdays for the fact that its different – we use an ‘R’ to abbreviate it.  It’s homey, its calming, its pub night, its Thursday.

So, Happy Thursday!, everyone!  Get out there and celebrate!

Use Your Hands to Make Money

Hand Modeling

Did you ever wonder who spreads I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter on that fresh blueberry muffin? Or who swipes the newest iPad to advertise its brilliant features? In other words, modeling isn’t just for the face. There are many models who earn a good living just using their hands to advertise products, both in print and film.

At Bohm-Marrazzo Photography, we’ve photographed many national consumer ads that needed a “hand” to humanize the product. But, this photograph was a comp shot for an aspiring hand model, not for the watch. This man is hoping that he gets the next iPad ad.

In order to be a hand model, you have to have a good looking hand. Then, it’s necessary to keep that good looking hand smooth and unblemished with clean nails that are evenly shaped. A little different for the women – fashion models have different looking hands than commercial models. A hand that’s advertising a toilet bowl cleaner is not going to have the same look as a hand that’s advertising a $50,000 diamond ring.

Hand models must be able to move gracefully and keep a relaxed pose, no matter how long it takes to get the shot… and sometimes that means hours! Scars? Skin discolorations? Bitten nails? Maybe think about a different career. Clearly, being a parts model – or what we call in advertising photography “anatomical modeling” – is not as easy as it looks!

Another tip…Protection! Remember that funny episode in Seinfeld when George Costanza’s hands get noticed for being soft and milky white? He starts wearing oven mits to preserve his possible hand modeling career and finds out it’s no easy task to keep your hands looking perfect.

But hey, no matter what your special talent may be, go for it – it’s always good to aim for the upper hand.

Food can be art too!

This photo was taken for the North Jersey chapter of Slow Food USA, a movement that encourages consumers to buy locally grown food. Depicting the importance of staying fresh, the plates here are made from palm leaves– how fitting? Needless to say, this photo shoot was both intriguing and delicious for everyone on set!

Here’s a recipe for Italian Dumplings so you can try this dish yourself!

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon finely chopped onion
6 tablespoons margarine
3 (10 ounce) packages frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained
1 cup ricotta cheese
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, divided
1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
3/4 teaspoon garlic salt
2 eggs, beaten
3 quarts water
3 tablespoons chicken bouillon granules

Directions:

1 In a skillet, saute onion in butter till tender.
2 Add spinach, cook and stir over medium heat until liquid has evaporated, about 5 minutes.
3 Stir in ricotta; cook and stir for 3 minutes.
4 Transfer to a large bowl.
5 Add 3/4 cup of flour, Parmesan cheese and garlic salt.
6 Cool for 5 minutes.
7 Stir in eggs; mix well.
8 Place remaining flour in a bowl.
9 Drop batter by tabelspoonfuls into flour; roll gently to coat and shape each into an oval.
10 In a large saucepan; bring water and bouillion to a boil-reduce heat.
11 Add a third of the dumplings at a time, simmer, uncovered for 8-10 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into a dumpling comes out clean.
12 Remove from the liquid with a slotted spoon; keep warm.
13 Drizzle with butter and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

Graduation

As the school season comes to an end, we happily start cleaning out our lockers, finishing up those doodles on our desks and count down the days until Mr. SoandSo from chemistry gives us back our confiscated items.

For those of you who have at least another year until graduation… hang in there!  You can do it!

Here are some helpful hints to get you through the rest of your school years..

1. Study – for real. Sometimes learning can actually be fun!

2. Eat more veggies!  The greener, the better.

3. De-clutter.  It’ll help your concentration.

4. SLEEP.  Try it.  And we don’t mean sleeping through the morning… we mean an actual good nights rest.

For those of you putting on that cap and gown.. we would like to wish you well!  CONGRATS!  Happy Graduation!  Good Luck!

Go ahead… smell ’em!

It is definitely the beginning of a wonderfully warm and sunny spring season!  We have changed the clocks, cleaned our homes and started the insane task of switching out our winter clothes for summer ones in the closet.   Yes, the weather has has a mind of its own… it snowed an incredible foot and a half just the other day, yet managed to melt and disappear by the time we all finished shoveling the driveway!  It’s time, dear Mother Nature.  We’re ready.  Bring on the sun! Bust out the sandals!  Let’s get outside and play!

Holidays

Getting ready for the holidays can be a great and exciting task!

We clean our houses, our closets, our wallets.  We gain friends, precious moments and width.  We eat….too much, but hey! we enjoy it and the company until the very last crumb.

So, as we put away our Halloween candy, shudder at the thought of another leftover turkey casserole, and bust out the next Holiday decor – we take a moment to reflect and take in a large deep breath of sunny and warm December “winter” air.

Holidays should be fun!  So, get out there, call your loved ones!  And keep smiling.

Tis the Season…for Flu Shots!

It’s that time of year again! Sneezing, coughing, fevers….colds and viruses are going around. Combat against sickness and germs by following a few guidelines:

  • Remember to wash your hands with warm water and soap often.
  • When coughing and sneezing, use a tissue or your elbow! Keep your hands germ free.
  • Dress for the weather. Be prepared for chilly nights or rain showers that may sneak up on you. Pack a coat and small umbrella in your bag.
  • Get a flu vaccination. Either by nasal spray or shot, arm yourself against this year’s flu virus.
  • Make sure you get plenty of rest. Keep your immune system going strong by getting the recommended 7-8 hours of sleep each night.

Don’t let your health stand in the way of making photographs! Prevent illness so you can keep on keepin’ on, and do what you do best!

Stay healthy!
