Use Your Hands to Make Money

Hand Modeling

Did you ever wonder who spreads I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter on that fresh blueberry muffin? Or who swipes the newest iPad to advertise its brilliant features? In other words, modeling isn’t just for the face. There are many models who earn a good living just using their hands to advertise products, both in print and film.

At Bohm-Marrazzo Photography, we’ve photographed many national consumer ads that needed a “hand” to humanize the product. But, this photograph was a comp shot for an aspiring hand model, not for the watch. This man is hoping that he gets the next iPad ad.

In order to be a hand model, you have to have a good looking hand. Then, it’s necessary to keep that good looking hand smooth and unblemished with clean nails that are evenly shaped. A little different for the women – fashion models have different looking hands than commercial models. A hand that’s advertising a toilet bowl cleaner is not going to have the same look as a hand that’s advertising a $50,000 diamond ring.

Hand models must be able to move gracefully and keep a relaxed pose, no matter how long it takes to get the shot… and sometimes that means hours! Scars? Skin discolorations? Bitten nails? Maybe think about a different career. Clearly, being a parts model – or what we call in advertising photography “anatomical modeling” – is not as easy as it looks!

Another tip…Protection! Remember that funny episode in Seinfeld when George Costanza’s hands get noticed for being soft and milky white? He starts wearing oven mits to preserve his possible hand modeling career and finds out it’s no easy task to keep your hands looking perfect.

But hey, no matter what your special talent may be, go for it – it’s always good to aim for the upper hand.

On Pointe

The New Jersey Ballet

Toes pointedTummy engaged. Back straight. Shoulders relaxedBottom tuckedLong neck…And this is why dancing is a fine art form.

The list of details to remember in ballet can go on and on, but it’s the way these details come together that really makes the magic happen. No matter what you’re doing, attention to detail must not be ignored. In photography, elements like texture, angle, depth of field, lighting, and pattern all join in to capture the perfect shot. Let’s take this image, for example. If you want to emphasize the shape of the ballerina’s feet, you might take an angle that shows the arch of her foot by the straight line of the stage floor. That way, you can wow your audience just as much as The NJ Ballet.

It’s all about what you’re trying to say

So, stay On Pointe!

Exteriors

Photographing architecture, both interior and exterior, can be a tricky task.  But when done properly, can result in a great image and perspective of what you’re trying to capture.

For exteriors, if possible, try to shoot on a day where the weather is to your benefit.  Photographing a children’s kindergarten school in the dead of winter with no sunlight and broken eerie tree branches… well let’s just say that might not be ideal.   A haunted house, on the other hand, will thrive in a spooky setting.

You will also need to learn how to do a basic edit in regards to proportion.  Have you ever tried to take a photo of a building and it comes out all wonky?  Trust me.. it was not built that way.  With a standard lens, you will always have some sort of distortion.

And of course, practice makes perfect.  So get out there! And happy shooting!

Man

Sometimes, we need to look through the lens with a new perspective.  The most interesting shot is often the one that you’d least expect… like this man, and his legs.   For some reason, in the middle of the shoot, we were drawn to the lighting that we were getting off of this pants and boots.  Had this picture been taken with his entire body, we may have missed the subtle glow.

Change up your angle every now and again…. let us know how it goes!

Zoom

Zooming and  cropping are little edits that  can change the entire composition of your images.

When we zoom, we are able to see details in our images that we may not have noticed to the naked eye.  We see the grains, the pores, the dust.  We see the reflections, the shine and the wrinkles.  It is always very important to look at your entire image at 100% to make sure that you have captured your image in the best possible way that you intended — that 33.7% zoom is simply not good enough and more often than not, quite deceiving.

By cropping, we are able to make our images much stronger.  We get rid of the extras, the excess and the distractions. We allow the audience to see the details that are the most important.  Here, you see a photo of some cute kittens on a bed.  Unless the cats got in the way of your pillow shot… start cropping and keep only the cats.  The pillows will always be pillows, but the eyes and expressions of those kittens will change faster than you can say ‘meow’.
